Hyspecs is 100% privately owned engineering company specialising in hydraulic, electrical, automation and pneumatic systems.
We help customers through the complete life of a project, from initial concept and system design to manufacture, installation, commissioning and ongoing service.
Our Story
Hyspecs was founded in 1972 by hydraulic engineer Wynne Cranston.
Wynne believed customers should receive the best solution for their application, not simply the products one manufacturer happened to sell. He established Hydraulic Specialties Limited (Hyspecs) to combine quality components from specialist manufacturers with strong technical knowledge and dependable service. Wynne became a pioneer of New Zealand’s cartridge valving industry.
Wynne's approach to the industry still guides us today: listen carefully, choose the right technology and stand behind the finished solution.
Wynne is no longer with us, but the way he did business still runs right through the company. Many of our people have spent most of their working lives here and our team averages over fifteen years in the industry. Some of the customers who backed us in the early years are still with us today.

Our Journey
- 1972 Wynne Cranston establishes Hydraulic Specialties Limited.
- 1980 The South Island operation is formed.
- 1990 to 1991 The Christchurch business joins forces with Dale Hydraulics.
- 2002 Hytech is established as our manufacturing division, built to meet demand for small run CNC milled aluminium and steel components. Today Hytech designs and manufactures hydraulic manifolds for customers across both countries.
- 2008 We move into a purpose built facility in Auckland. The company had outgrown its old site and the new building brought stock, workshop, manufacture, testing and engineering together under one roof.
- 2010 Hyspecs expands into Australia, starting in Melbourne. Brisbane follows.
- 2016 We form our own electrical department. Electrical work had always been done by contractors, and bringing it in house let us offer customers a complete solution rather than half of one.
- 2022 We celebrate 50 years in business. Along the way we came through four major downturns, earthquakes, fires, burglaries and a global pandemic.
- 2024 We add automation and controls. We already had the suppliers and the product knowledge, so the team hit the ground running.
- Today More than 65 people across our Auckland and Christchurch branches, satellite branches in Nelson and Dunedin. Also our Australian operations in Melbourne and Brisbane.
