Supporting Auckland’s Central Interceptor with Engineered Hydraulic Control
Auckland’s $1.668 billion Central Interceptor is the largest wastewater infrastructure project ever undertaken in New Zealand. The 16.2 km tunnel, running deep beneath the city and under the Manukau Harbour, is designed to significantly reduce wet-weather overflows while improving network resilience and supporting future growth.
Delivered for Watercare by the Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture, the project includes complex shafts, pump stations and water control systems that must operate reliably in a demanding wastewater environment for decades to come.
AWMA was engaged to provide engineered water control solutions across the project, including penstocks, stop logs and flap gates manufactured from high-performance duplex stainless steel.
Hyspecs was proud to support AWMA as a specialist hydraulic systems supplier for the ISO and RTC gate installations.

Engineered Hydraulic Systems for Critical Infrastructure
Working alongside AWMA, Hyspecs was responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly, testing, supply, installation and commissioning of the hydraulic gate systems that operate key isolation and control gates within the network.
Our scope included:
- Hydraulic Power Units and accumulator skids
- PLC-based gate control systems
- IP68-rated stainless steel enclosures
- Full hydraulic and electrical integration
Each system was engineered to meet strict performance, durability and compliance requirements, including seismic evaluation and IP68 testing for submerged conditions.
From detailed design documentation and functional descriptions through to on-site installation, oil flushing and pressure testing, Hyspecs delivered complete hydraulic packages tailored to AWMA’s gate assemblies and Watercare’s operational standards.

Built for Long-Term Performance
The Central Interceptor tunnel has been designed for a 100-year service life. Reliable hydraulic gate operation is critical to ensuring safe flow control, system isolation and long-term asset protection.
By working closely with AWMA, Hyspecs contributed to the successful delivery of robust hydraulic control systems that form an essential part of this landmark infrastructure project.
As the Central Interceptor moves toward completion in 2026, we are proud to have supported AWMA in delivering hydraulic solutions for one of New Zealand’s most significant water infrastructure investments.
