Technical Sales Engineer, Hydraulics - Auckland (updated 21/05/2010)

Hyspecs is looking to fill a Technical Sales Engineering position in its Auckland branch. We are not looking for an ordinary Mechanical Engineer; we are looking for someone unique. You will preferably have hydraulic experience; however applicants with engineering or electrical backgrounds have proved successful in our field. You must be eligable to work in NZ, have great English language skills and local industry knowledge to apply for this role.

The position we have available is a demanding one that requires a wide range of skills.

• Independent management and growth of a sales territory
• Actively promoting our company, its products and services
• Technical back up and support of our products
• Creativity - prototype system design work – often from conceptual design through to final commissioning

Hydraulic Specialties (HYSPECS) is New Zealand’s largest privately owned fluid power engineering company, with branches in Auckland and Christchurch. We specialise in hydraulic component sales, service and full system design - NZ wide. We import products from manufacturers in Europe, America, & Asia to support to the local market. We also have a manufacturing division (HYTECH) utilising CNC milling machines to produce hydraulic cartridge valve manifold technology. Our goal is to make money whilst providing the best product support, technical support, & customer service in the NZ hydraulic industry.

We are looking for a person who will be committed to working in the best interests of Hyspecs in all circumstances. We place a high level of trust in our employees, and allow them to manage their own time and work independently and collaboratively. Any new employee will be supervised to start with, but will be given more freedom as they prove their capabilities.

The position is an unusual mixture of “sales representative”, “technical support person” and “hydraulic system designer”. We require a person with good interpersonal skills to maintain and build relationships with customers, and seek out potential new customers. The technical support aspect comes with answering questions about our products and their applications, and with fault finding existing products and systems. A good memory will help with this role as we have a wide range of products available, and they may be applied in many different ways. The system designing role is a challenging one because we are often asked to design prototype machines with incomplete information and design parameters. We are looking for someone unique who is up to this task, and if you are successful it is an extremely interesting and rewarding position.

Some examples of hydraulic systems we have designed recently:

• Grape Harvester
• Bark Blower Truck
• Mussel Barge
• Forestry Processing Head
• Motorised Access Equipment
• Four wheel drive vehicle

The role requires up to 1 week every 6-8 weeks out of town visiting customers in other centres, plus regular visits to local customers when you are not on a sales trip. We have a team of staff that covers the North Island, and you will be allocated a specific area to visit and look after. During these visits some customers will not have any current inquiries, some will ask for your immediate assistance with an issue, and some will ask you to do some work and get back to them with information. Customers love to be looked after so regular visits are the best way of building great business relationships.

There is no formal hydraulics training currently available from any independent provider, so Hyspecs conducts ongoing in-house training and all staff are asked to attend. Knowledge of the products and how to apply them is vital to the success of any person in this position. The informal training sessions are targeted at improving this knowledge of products and their application. We also encourage staff in taking external training courses that are complimentary to our work.

After time in the job we also expect our sales engineers to sit a series of examinations to help with their training. The objective being that they can better serve our customers.

These exams are arranged into three levels of difficulty:

Level one - for Assistant Sales/Service engineers.
Level two - for Sales/Service Engineers.
Level three - for Senior Sales/Service Engineers.

A pass mark of 60% or more is required to attain an HCHE (Hyspecs Certificate in Hydraulic Engineering).

As you will be required to travel, we will provide you with a company vehicle, mobile phone and laptop. Your position will be full time, salary is negotiable dependant on experience and you will be eligible for the company bonus scheme. You will also be provided with a company credit card to cover all expenses incurred during sales trips.
